We slept together in the water bed. It was better than my wildest dreams. We didn’t even smoke dope or anything, and I didn’t even make the first move. Before I knew it, you were lying naked next to me, then you were kissing me, then your hands were all over me, and I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t want you to stop. I mean it was a secret dream—I’m in a water bed in some ritzy-pitzy lesbian apartment, Janis Joplin is on the stereo, there is a scratch at the window, I open it, suddenly my best girlfriend bursts in on top of me, and we make passionate love for hours. Only it wasn’t exactly like that. It was actually kind of weird because anytime I tried to touch you, Nadine, you pulled away or held my hands back. It was this stone butch number I had no idea you had in you. It went against my grain in a way because I’m one of those women who likes to, at least if you don’t do each other at the same time, have some give and take. But you were into giving it, Nadine, and probably it did me good to just lie around for an hour and take it.

But then, this is the really strange part, when we were done, you kind of just rolled over and pretended to be asleep. Not me, boy, I was totally agitated. I leaned over and tapped you on the arm. “Nadine,” I said, “does this mean we’re girlfriends again?” You turned and faced me. I wanted to hold you, but you tightened up as soon as I touched you.

“We are always girlfriends,” you rasped, then you rolled across to the furthest side of the water bed and fell fast asleep. After another hour of drifting listlessly toward dreamland, me, I fell asleep, too.
